Gone With The Wind – MAXDoors Stand Strong During High Velocity Winds

The Challenge

MAXDoor – a vertical lift fabric industrial door company located in Michigan – was contacted by a steel mill located off Lake Michigan. With over 400 doors onsite, many were being blown out due to high wind gusts.  They needed replacement doors that would stand strong against gusty winds and last for many years!  Weather patterns are changing in every part of the world.  In North America the average wind speed is increasing.  Industries are facing significant wind impact and entrances to buildings must be secure and hold fast during high wind episodes. Business must address the issue and replace old doors with more wind-resistant doors that can withstand increased wind speeds.

The customer contacting MAXDoor had many steel and rubber doors in place and was very disappointed as these doors were constantly blowing out. These doors are presented and sold to customers who believe they can be driven through and sustain high winds.  In fact, rolling steel and rubber doors cannot hold up to strong winds. Constantly replacing doors was getting very expensive, and downtime was cutting into the profitability of the business. A single layer door will fail – it will blow out!

The Solution

MAXDoor was the fix.  We tested our door in a high visibility area with strong wind gusts and a highly corrosive environment.  To the customers surprise, it has been ten years, and the door has never blown out and is still in operation.  MAXDoor was the perfect solution for our steel mill customer.  Doors are being installed and withstand the high winds off Lake Michigan. Many Door Manufactures strive to get to a 3 second burst of 20 psf or 88 mph Wind Load rating. Gadgets like Wind Bars and Wedges in the door guides try to achieve this rating.  MAXDoors are stronger than any single layer Rubber or Steel Curtain door of the same size. MAXDoors can easily exceed 20 PSF.  MAXDoors use Aluminum Rectangle Tube Horizontal Beams that do not twist in High Wind. These horizontal beams are on 3 foot centers and  transfers the wind load into the building structure every 3 feet making it easier to open or close the door during high winds.

The Results

  • A satisfied customer who made an investment that will result in tough, reliable doors with a long life-span of 20-25 years of service life.
  • The Custom PVC fabric MAXDoor uses can withstand harsh environments. Exposure to many chemicals and can effectively protect against wind, dust, moisture, and other elements.  Maxdoor’s robust construction and advanced features make it suitable for use in many types of facilities where durability and reliability are crucial
  • MAXDoors simple design has horizontal traveling beams constructed to flex and give way when there is a collision. Many industries use large industrial equipment daily and having the right door in place will be beneficial when the door is hit. Real life collisions prove that the horizontal beams flex out of the door guides without damage and are easily put back into the door guides saving hours of downtime and repair costs.
  • Made in the USA and located in Michigan, MAXDoor is 2-3 times faster than rolling steel or multiple leaf steel vertical lift doors and will substantially reduce annual operating and maintenance costs.
  • MAXDoors enhance safety and productivity at the door opening.
